Swearing At Motorists Werdegang kann man durchaus als ereignisreich und ungewöhnlich beschreiben. Angefangen hat alles mit einem ausgedachten Bandnamen auf einem Plakat für ein Konzert, dass es gar nicht gab. Das alles geschah 1994 in Dayton, Ohio.
Das eben erwähnte Konzertplakat tauchte nach und nach in allen Plattenläden der Stadt und in den kleinen Undergroundclubs auf, man kann also getrost behaupten, dass jede musikinteressierte Person den Namen Swearing At Motorists schon mal irgendwo gelesen hatte.
Dies führte dazu, dass Dave Doughman prompt auf seine zuhause aufgenommenen Kassetten eben diesen Namen klatschte und sie an seine Freunde verteilte, was quasi die Geburtsstunde von Swearing At Motorists war.
In den späten Neunzigern veröffentlichten Swearing At Motorists eine Reihe von 7‘‘ Platten bei verschiedenen Labels.
Nachdem Songs der Band auf diversen amerikanischen Radiosendern hoch und runter gespielt wurden und die Presse weltweit nur gutes über sie zu berichten wusste, kam ein neues Label ins Spiel, Secretly Canadian.
Insgesamt veröffentlichte Swearing At Motorists zwei EPs und vier LPs auf Secretly Canadian, unter anderem auch die Platte „Number Seven Downtown“ und das Album „This Flag Signals Goodbye“ aus dem Jahr 2002. Beide Alben wurden vom Mojo Magazin zum „Underground Album des Jahres“ in ihrem jeweiligen Release-Jahr gekürt.
2005 zog es Swearing At Motorists nach Berlin, wo auch das finale Album in Zusammenarbeit mit Secretly Canadian erschien, „Last Night Becomes This Morning“ im gleichen Atemzug verabschiedeten sie sich leise in die nie enden wollenden Nächte Berlins.
Acht Jahre später tauchte die Band plötzlich in Hamburg auf und „The World’s local band“ fand ein neues Zuhause und einen neuen Schlagzeuger, auch ein neues Album war mit „While Laughing The Joker Tells The Truth“ im Gepäck welches auf Anton Newcombes Label A Recordings ltd. veröffentlich wurde.

Swearing At Motorists has come a long way since its birth as a poster for a fake band in 1994. A few months after the posters mysteriously appeared in record stores & music venues around Dayton, Ohio, Dave Doughman jokingly scrawled the name on a cassette of home recordings that he gave to friends, and the band was officially born.
The late ’90s found S@M releasing a slew of 7” EPs on different labels, and after getting repeated plays from John Peel and favorable press worldwide, the band landed a contract with the then new label Secretly Canadian.
They released 2 EPs & 4 LPs on SC, including 2000’s Number Seven Uptown & 2002’s This Flag Signals Goodbye, both of which were named MOJO Magazine’s “Underground Album of the Year” the years they were released.
Swearing At Motorists relocated to Berlin, Germany in 2005, releasing their last LP for Secretly Canadian, Last Night Becomes This Morning the following year before quietly disappearing into the never-ending Berlin night …
8 years later, the band has resurfaced in Hamburg, Germany, with a new album titled While Laughing, The Joker Tells The Truth, to be released 03 November on Anton Newcombe’s label A Recordings Ltd. Co-produced by Dave and Rick McPhail (of the legendary German band Tocotronic), the album tells the tales of those “lost” 8 years in classic Motorists style.
